The City of Seattle’s Community Technology Advisory Board (CTAB) is using its February 8 meeting to host three of the major telecommunications companies for a discussion on digital equity. There will also be an opportunity for the community to ask questions.
We’ve all seen how critical it is for all residents to have sufficient internet, devices, skills and technical support for families to learn, earn, engage and stay connected. These are the goals of Seattle IT’s Internet for All work that strives to close digital equity gaps. The February 8 forum is a great opportunity to learn more about what these companies are doing in our community and what opportunities there are for organizations, schools and others to partner with them on digital inclusion initiatives. It’s also a chance for them to hear from the Seattle community.

Companies that provide internet services are playing an increasing role and have stepped up investments into programs to help lower-income residents obtain and retain services. This is true for cable companies, historic phone service providers like CenturyLink and Lumen, and a range of wireless companies. T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T are major leaders in phone and data services, including high-speed internet (broadband). They are participating in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program internet subsidy, working with schools, institutions, and more. CTAB and the City have also expressed interest in what happens as they roll out 5G connectivity and phase out earlier systems; what happens to availability and affordability.
